GOAL : The development of productive and sustainable agropastoral systems that conserve the resource base and support rural livelihoods in the dry areas of the WANA region.

  • Sustainable agropastoral production systems and livelihood strategies adopted by rural communities

  • Increased investment in development of dry areas
  • Reports from national Agriculture Ministries, extension agencies, and development programs

  • Governments committed to implementation of participatory community approaches and dry land development

    PURPOSE : To provide technical, policy and institutional options that empower local communities and promote sustainable livelihoods and production systems and the conservation of agropastoral resources.

  • Community approaches and technical, institutional and policy options (TIPOs) available to policy makers, research and extension services, rural communities, NGOs and other stakeholders.
  • Research findings are included in the design of rural development strategies in dry areas.
  • The community approach is institutionalized in research and extension services and in development programs and projects.
  • Use of the project’s methodologies and tools by governments and research institutions to evaluate welfare and resource management effects and tradeoffs of different options.
  • Published package of tools, methodologies and practices comprising the community approach.
  • Published recommendations for TIPOs.
  • Medium- and long-term plans of research institutions, extension services, and development projects
  • Published government reports and national development policies
  • Evaluation mission reports
  • Formulated recommendations are acceptable to the government
  • Government and national extension staff support dissemination of research results
  • Development projects apply the new approaches and support CDPs
