The Mashreq / Maghreb project began in 1995, and is now in its third phase.
Entitled "Developing the Sustainable Livelihoods of Agropastoral Communities of West Asia and North Africa (Mashreq / Maghreb III)", this third phase is working to improve the livelihoods of poor farmers in low rainfall areas of North Africa and West Asia.

In all, the project works with eight countries - Algeria, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, and Tunisia.
In these areas, researchers are working with farmers and local communities to develop new technical, institutional and policy options. These will improve people's lives by boosting the productivity of livestock, crops, rangelands, and water.

In fact, the project aims to address many of the major problems that the very poor in these areas face.
It also emphasises the need to conserve natural resources - so providing for people's needs today and ensuring that there is enough for the children of tomorrow. |
